Dr. Maher Bahloul

Associate Professor

PROFILE

Dr. Maher Bahloul earned his PhD degree from Cornell University, NY, USA. He also holds a Masters’ Degree from the Sorbonne University, Paris, France. He has taught linguistics, language, translation, and communications for more than 25 years at institutions such as Cornell University, SUNY at Binghamton, Kind Saud University, and the American University of Sharjah. His teaching and research interests are theoretical and applied linguistics, dialectology, teacher training, and learning pedagogies, especially the Learning Through The Arts (LTTA) field.

The LTTA.ORG is a non-profit educational network which fosters excellence in integrating arts in teaching and learning.

Teaching & Learning Pedagogy & Students’ Evaluations

I have used a variety of teaching methods to engage students and have them appreciate course materials both in face-to-face and online classes. Comments inside the students’ evaluations show some relevant feedback.

  • Talk Show Model: To make presentations a much more enjoyable activity, I introduced a new set of guidelines which mimic the entertaining talk shows within the entertainment industry. Thus, students take on the roles of show guests and show hosts as they plan and deliver their presentations. Students enjoyed the new model and turned class into a genuine edutaining space.
  • Slido.com: Within the Flipped Classroom pedagogy, I use this online website to allow students to send questions to the presenters ahead of their presentations. This flipped classroom feature turned to be very effective for online teaching.
  • Quizziz.com: This website was also very popular among my students as a quizzing, revising, and gaming tool. Both my students and I made use of this online facility before and during the online classes.
  • Quizlet and Quizlet.live.com: To diversify individual and group activities, this online platform allows for individual and group work for revising content in fun group competitions
  • Kahoot.com: This website was also heavily used especially after the switch to online delivery of classes.
  • Google Docs: This resource was used for writing, editing, and getting instant feedback. I started this activity in the lab, and it was very handy when we switched to the online teaching.
  • Small Group and Pair Presentation Activities: In order to get ready for the Talk Show presentations, students were divided in small groups, mostly in groups of two. The various requirements of the Talk Show boosted to a great extent their bonding skills.
  • Note-taking and Summary Worksheets: To promote new vocabulary building and summarization, students took regular notes of each single class lecture or presentation than wrote clean summaries of notes taken. I collected all materials and sent them pdf copies for revision during Midterm and Final exams.
  • Students’ Reflections & Reactions Worksheets: This is one of students’ new favorite activity; it’s a version of peer evaluation where successful areas of presentations/Talk Shows and areas of improvement are highlighted. Presenters especially enjoyed to read their classmates comments and provide feedback/reaction to them.
  • Edited Volume Project: Students treasured submitting their papers and reports to be included in a volume co-edited by their classmates. Three volumes are now getting finalized and students will see for the first time their written work within a classroom-based volume.
